Garburator Repair

A great garburator can make your life much easier. But a sluggish, leaky, noisy drain with unpleasant odours pouring out of it can complicate your life considerably. The most common cause of these problems is jamming.

When a food item – from carrot peels to broccoli to potato peels – gets stuck in your blades or lodged in the drain hole, the blades of your unit won’t be able to turn and do their job. To troubleshoot the problem, try the following:

  1. 1
Turn the machine off. Using a jammed disposal can burn the motor out, so turn off the appropriate power source at the circuit breaker until it is repaired, so you don’t forget and accidentally turn it on.
  2. 2
Try to remove the jammed item with tongs or pliers (remember to disconnect the power first!). Never put your hand in a garburator.
  3. 3
If the jammed item won’t come out, it’s time to call in the professionals to come see what’s wrong and help get your unit running again.

Jamming is not the only problem a disposal may have. If your blades are not turning, the unit is humming but not working, or it is not draining, it’s probably time for some form of maintenance.

If your garburator won’t spin or work at all, there might be a bigger issue. Check to make sure the unit is getting power. If power is getting to the unit, but it’s still not working, flip the reset switch (under the sink on the bottom of the disposal) or unplug it and plug it back in so, it can reset. If that doesn’t do it, give us a call, and we’ll come give you a free estimate for repairs or replacement.

Garburator Installation

Sometimes a repair is not an option. We also install new disposals that can have you back up and running in no time.

Here are a few reasons it might be time for a new unit:

  • Repair is not an option. While you may not be able to tell this by simply looking at your garburator, our accredited team can come in for an assessment and help you determine whether your current system is worth saving by evaluating factors such as rust, corrosion, pricing, etc. If troubleshooting isn’t helping improve your situation, it’s probably time for a new disposal.
  • Leaky and/or overflowing device. A garburator is part of your plumbing system, so leaks can happen. If you’re seeing a lot of water damage or other leakage issues from constant overflowing and leaks, it’s probably time for a new unit.
  • Your system was manufactured more than five years ago. While older disposals can certainly be repaired, once your unit is beyond five years old, it will be more prone to frequent problems due to corrosion, rust, and overall years of crud building up. It’s probably time to get a new unit.

Once you have your new garbage disposal, here are a few routine maintenance tips to help keep your kitchen free of strange noises and smells:

  • Grind waste completely. After every use, empty and flush the disposal and pipes completely to clear out leftovers and any other objects.
  • Clean it with a brush to keep it free of crud. This reduces the risk of jamming and keeps your unit running smoothly. Soft and fibrous foods and fine cuttings often get tangled in the blades, which can create a jam if not addressed.
  • Run cold water when disposing of items. This will help food harden and make it easier for your garburator to process. As food heats up, it softens, which makes more work for your blades to thoroughly grind and clear the appliance.
