A garbage disposal helps you break down food waste and avoid that lingering odour that comes from throwing stinky food in the trash. Most people hardly ever think about their disposal – until it stops working, that is.

Garburator Repair Service

Garburators can run into a lot of issues. If you’re having problems with yours, there’s a pretty good chance something is jammed in there.

When a piece of food or something else gets stuck in the blades or lodged in the drain hole, the blades of your garburator can’t do their job.

Here are a few steps to help you try to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. 1
The most important thing to do is to turn the machine off and not use it until the blades are unjammed – you could burn out your motor, which would leave you in an even worse position.
  2. 2
Once you’ve disconnected the power, try to remove whatever is lodged in the drain using tongs or pliers – never stick your hand in the disposal. Common culprits include carrots, potato peels, and celery.
  3. 3
If you can’t get the jammed item out on your own, call the professionals to come diagnose the problem.

While jamming is the most common cause of a malfunctioning disposal, it is far from the only cause. Watch out for strange noises or underperformance as they could also be signs your garburator is having trouble. These can be easily overlooked, so it’s important that you pay close attention. Foul odours, running slowly, not grinding food as well as usual, and odd noises could mean your blades are broken or need to be replaced.

If your garburator just refuses to work at all, the root cause could be a bigger issue. To figure out what’s going on, first check to make sure power is getting to the unit. If it’s on but still not working, try flipping the reset switch (usually found on the bottom of the disposal under the sink) or unplug the machine and plug it back in to let it reset itself. If it’s still not working, call us, and we’ll come out to provide a free estimate for repairs or replacement.

Garburator Installation

If repairs are out of the question, we also install new disposals that can have your kitchen back at its best in no time, without exorbitant costs.

If you’re not sure if your system needs to be repaired or replaced, here are a few signs that a new appliance might be necessary:

  • The disposal is beyond repair. This might not be so easy to tell just by looking at it, so call our team for an assessment and we’ll help you determine whether your current system can be salvaged or not. Often, troubleshooting can have little or no effect on your disposal. In such a case, it’s probably time for a new one.
  • Frequent overflowing, or a leak in the device. While people often don’t think of it this way, your disposal is part of your home’s plumbing system, so it is just as prone to leaks as anything else. If your unit overflows or leaks constantly, or creates water damage or leakage in other ways, it’s probably time for a new one before you have a home repair emergency on your hands.
  • The disposal is more than five years old. Older disposals can sometimes be repaired, but if it was manufactured more than five years ago, you'd probably want to replace it as the durability of older units wears down and they are more likely to have issues down the line.

After your new garbage disposal has been installed, follow these tips to help it continue operating well:

  • Grind waste thoroughly. Every time you use the disposal, empty and flush it completely to prevent clogs and keep it clean.
  • Clear out grease, clogs, and buildup by cleaning your unit with a brush from time to time. This reduces the risk of blockage and improves your device’s performance.
  • When disposing of items, use cold water to help them harden and make them easier to grind up. Hot items are softer, which means your blades have to work harder to effectively grind them and clear them from the system. Also, soft and fibrous foods often get tangled in the blades and create a jam.
